From the picture above, the Jim Thorpe Area swimming hole in
Glen Onoko Pennsylvania may seem like one incredibly gnarly bridge jumping
situation. Now while the Jim Thorpe Area
is certainly a pretty enjoyable place to hang out, from my experience, you
would almost certainly break your legs if you jumped of the bridge into the
water. Some of the locals here avidly
disagreed with me here, but let’s just say that I did not see any of them
actually go for the jump. Who knows,
maybe a few people managed to get out here right after hurricane sandy and make
use of the excessively high water levels, but by and large, unless there has
been an inordinate amount of rain, I am officially deeming the Jim Thorpe Area
bridge jumpable.
That is not to say that I did not enjoy myself at the Jim
Thorpe Area. Certain areas of the river
are deep enough to enjoyably swim in, and the river is just wide enough so as
to crossing it fairly entertaining. If I lived closer to this place, I would
probably come here pretty often to cool off.
While the Jim Thorpe Area does not have any particularly exceptional
attributes, where it excels is size.
This place is BIG. On a hot
summer day a lot of public swimming areas can get overcrowded, but not this
one. There is enough river for everybody
here. I can guarantee it. Overall I
would recommend this place to anyone looking for privacy and basic swimming.
Here is link to the location for anyone who wants to try it out
